The Sublime

Starting with explaining that the picturesque was calm and beautiful and thus defining the sublime as something that agitates. The sublime unsettles and is unlimited, extreme energy, a delightful horror and the power of nature.

Critical Practice Tutorial: Jean Wainwright
This was a chance to talk through the grade for the initial 'test'essay with Jean Wainwright. Always interesting and helpful I now have to apply the advise to the new essay. It makes up 70% of the mark.

ESSAY BREIF

Background.

This essay runs alongside your methodology unit. It is intended that the subject you choose to research will be relevant to the practical work that you are producing for the unit.

It is important that you plan the structure of your essay and choose your own title. There will be tutorial support that will assist you with the essay.
Please see announcements for your individual tutorial slots which will take place on: 5th, 7th, 8th, 12th, 19th Feb.

Your Task

A theoretical essay that relates to and underpins the visual work produced in the methodology unit 2,500-3000 words. The work should follow academic conventions in its structure and in its use of references (Harvard System)
You will find a number of useful study guides on myUCA that will help you with your written work.

This essay will comprise of 70% of your marks for critical perspectives (theory) for the 2nd year.  

Deadline 14th March.
You must have put your essay through turnitin between 10 and 12am on this date. Please also deliver a hard copy to the admin office not later than 12am.

Please note:
1. Maria Tannant will be coming on 12th Feb at 11.30 following your morning lecture to explain the advantages of Turnitin.

2. Turnitin will be set up the week before so that you can have a trial plagiarism report.


Assessment

This essay forms part of the final assessment for the critical perspectives unit.  The grade you receive is summative and contributes 70% of the Critical Perspectives unit for the 2nd Year. Please see a sample of the assessment sheet attached.

Under the new assessment regulations you do not have an automatic right to retrieve or retake a unit if you fail.  It is therefore very important that you submit your work to the given deadline and that you make sure you have fulfilled the assessment criteria.
It is also essential that you submit work by the given deadline.


The criteria for the essay are:

Knowledge of:  Current theoretical ideas and critical perspectives relevant to art and design specifically photographic practice and your methodology unit.

Knowledge of: Academic methods and conventions for research, analysis and written work.

Understanding through: The selection, analysis and synthesis of relevant theoretical ideas to form critical argument.

Technical and applied skills through:  Clear, structured and effective written communication that adheres to academic conventions.

Technical and applied skills through:  Self-management and the skills associated with an independent learner.

Also note that no numerical mark is given only a letter grade from A++ to F

Tutors will have given your work a numerical mark but this will not be released to you until the end of year boards have ratified the marks.
